Two years of undergraduate Geology at Adelaide University, followed by 7 years working in various roles in the automotive repair industry, eventually saw Daryl return to studies with the fledgling Northern Territory University.
Whilst working full time at the Menzies School of Health Research as the Flow Cytometry facility manager/operator, he completed a broad based Biochemistry-Marine Biology-Ecology BSc (NTU). Followed by an MSc(med)-Preliminary (Syd) in Human Retrovirology.
After this he moved to the Waite Agricultural Research Institute (Adelaide), to undertake PhD studies in Plant Molecular Virology/Phytopathology under the ever watchful gaze of Bob Symons. In part due to Bob’s untimely illness and subsequent death, his thesis remains un-submitted...
A short stint with a joint appointment at The University of Adelaide (Microarray Facility Manager) and The Hanson Institute IMVS (Research officer – Cytokine Laboratory) before arriving at ANU in late 2000.
Since then, he has dedicated himself to all that is microscopy related, serving as Head of Advanced Light Microscopy for, initially, the Plant Cell Biology group RSBS, and later the Centre for Advanced Microscopy. Between 2000 and 2009 he was also the Multiphoton Microscope Manager for the Department of Neuroscience, JCSMR.
