CAM has had a great response to the inaugural CAM Image Competition, with submissions showcasing the varied work undertaken at CAM by users from many different disciplines. The judges had quite a difficult choice, however we are delighted to announce the winners.

1st Prize

Olga Zaytseva from the ACRF Department of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics, JCSMR, has won first prize with her image' Sweetheart'. 

Olga's confocal image shows the cells of a Drosophila ovary. Germline cells differentiate to form cysts, normally arranged in chains, which grow and mature as they move away from the stem cell niche. In this image, DNA of all cells is shown in yellow and the cytoplasm in purple. Red outlines the germline cells.

2nd Prize

Second prize is awarded to Ryan McQuinn, from RSB, Plant Science, ARC CoE Plant Energy Biology, for 'Nature's microscopic weaving', a cryo-SEM image of the anther of an Arabidopsis sp. flower.

3rd Prize

Matt Valetich from RSES has won third prize for his image, 'How many triangles can you see in this picture?'. Matt's SEM image shows characteristic pitting of galena (PbS) crystals that occurs during polishing. The crystals are cubic, so the tetrahedral pits are actually the corners of little cubes of galena that fall out of the sample during polishing.

These images, along with other submissions, will be included in a CAM calendar for 2019.
