Images of microfossils taken at CAM are being used to help understand Australia’s past environment, as part of the Australian Museum’s Citizen Science project “Date a Fossil”.
Food poisoning is a major health burden worldwide. Foodborne bacteria and their toxins can cause damage and trigger inflammation, contributing to diarrhoea and vomiting. Prof. Si Ming Man and his team are trying to understand how the immune system fights against these disease-causing bacteria.
Dr Ben Long, Dr Wei Yih Hee and Prof. Dean Price from Research School of Biology have successfully synthesised structural carboxysomes within the chloroplast of the model plant, tobacco, using a minimal gene set. Using TEM, Rubisco can be seen encapsulated in the negatively stained, purified plant carboxysomes.
